Alexander Steinwendtner takes on a stubborn opponent
Milling, scarfing, sawing - Alexander Steinwendtner goes deep. And his opponent is a tough opponent. Wood, stone, sails, leather - materials with a soul dating back thousands of years form the basis for Steinwendtner's seemingly archaic works.
Golling Castle provides a venerable backdrop for his work during the festival.
For over 20 years, nature has been the most beautiful source of inspiration for the Salzburg artist. At the foot of the Lienbach marble quarry, in a forge over a hundred years old, hidden deep in the Adnet forests, the Attersee student creates monumental works with enormous expressive power.Be it the Georg Trakl avenue of 14 marble steles in memory of the great Austrian poet at Salzburg University Park, the Christian Doppler sculpture weighing sixteen tons in front of the university laboratory building, the "Mikados" in the Kunsthal Brantebjerg in Denmark, his "Random" series, made from milled wooden panels painted with oil and varnish, his "Segelbilder", made from old, discarded sails that tell stories in themselves, or the new "Mojo" series, typefaces made from antique ink.
"For me, creating pictures and sculptures is not purely structured work, but rather a process of creation and immersion in the material.
I really appreciate working with things that have a life for me and that I can feel," says Steinwendtner. The Salzburg artist's works can be seen this year as part of the Golling Festival from June 23rd to August 30th. Golling Castle, with its stately 13th century walls, is the perfect setting for Steinwendtner's archaic work. The paintings and sculptures can be viewed in three locations, in the castle hall, art room and outdoors, and on August 18th, on "Day XIII", you can also meet the artist in person.
